Who May Be At Risk:
Individuals who lived, or worked at Camp Lejeune, were exposed to contaminated water for at least 30 days between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987 and suffered from a condition linked to the contaminated water. Exposure to the contaminants in Camp LeJeune's water could have had devastating effects on many people, including unborn babies.
In 1982, the military found that the drinking water at several Camp LeJeune water treatment plants was contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The affected water came from the Tarawa Terrace, Hadnot Point, and Holcomb Boulevard treatment plants. The VOCs detected included:
Perchloroethylene/tetrachloroethylene (PCE)
Trichloroethylene (TCE)
Benzene
Trans-1,2-dichloroethylene (trans-1,2-DCE)
Vinyl chloride
These contaminants were introduced through activities such as dry cleaning, leaks from underground storage tanks, industrial spills, and improper waste disposal.
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) conducted an analysis and determined that PCE levels at Tarawa Terrace exceeded EPA limits from November 1957 to February 1987. Furthermore, the ATSDR estimated that other VOC contamination occurred between August 1953 and January 1985.
CAMP LEJEUNE JUSTICE ACT OF 2022
The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 allows individuals who were injured by the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune to pursue compensation from a lawsuit.
